Week 7: Workshop Activity – Physical Forms of Texts VS. Electronic Versions.

With the introduction to electronic versions, textbooks and novels can be readily available to a mass number of people rather than the traditional approach of a physical textbook, book etc which can sometimes be unavailable and can be quite expensive to purchase for some individuals. It can also be easily accessible to anyone and can be readable as long as the user has a computer or ebook reader at hand. It’s easy to store and reduces paper wastage which is beneficial in caring for the environment. In contrast traditional physical books, magazines and newspapers provide us with text uncluttered with distracting mediums which restricts one from fully understanding the meaning behind the text. EBooks’ and computers have bad resolutions and refreshing screens which could affect the eye sight if mass texts are read on computer devices. It allows users to scan more than one page at a readable size, rather than scrolling for the information page by page. Books allow the reader to write down notes on the side and highlight keywords in passages which is not available on electronic versions. Physical versions can also be easily archived and retrieved. Computers need to be charged regularly which can distract the reader when it comes to deep reading, physical texts are therefore ideal for transport and finally if there was no more books or magazine, what would we do with our pretty bookcases?
Week 6: Workshop Activity – Authorship on Twitter

Authorship on twitter is considerably hard to determine due to the broad spectrum of what people tweet about. I believe the user becomes the author when the subject of the tweet is in relation to themselves and their personal lives. In contrast when it comes to re-tweeting the title of author is transferred to the original author of the text in which they are re-tweeting. Unlike typical blogging sites, tweeter requires users to be concise with their messages to a limit of 140 characters per tweet, hence re-tweets usually involve re-formatting the original text or shortening it to include the original author; if the text still successfully conveys the artist original intentions then authorship remains with the original author. If the re-tweet conveys a different intention, then i believe authorship belongs to the person who posted the re-tweet. It also could be argued that as long as your name is evident in or near the text then it’s assumed that that name is the author of the text, much like authors to books and journals. Since twitter has the user’s name posted on each tweet they publish, it could be said that they become the author. So therefore it would seem that authorship should be associated to the person who published the text due to reader relating the text with the person’s name and profile picture beside it.

What defines us?
14 Oct 2010 2 Comments
what makes us who we are?
The food we eat? Where we live? Who we hang out with? Where we go daily? The language we talk? How we look?
Capturing ones personal identity through video and images. For example the food we eat will give a hint to what the person’s background is without having to ask them. It defines our likes and dislikes allowing the viewer to become that person.
Another example is the typical Japanese school student. They are defined by their uniform. it tells society who they are and gives them an image , therefore creating their social identity.
